Hand crank 'em all the time. The thumb advice is good. One compression stroke at a time is good advice too. Pre ignition is the chief cause of kick. The other is role back, that is an attempt my the engine or cranker to proceed into the next compresion stroke but with out hte necessary force to accomplish it. Thus the engine rolls back to a compression free position. I bruised the bone in my right thumb once cranking. The engine started but the throw out on the pulley or the pin in the crank was so worn that the crank did not kick out of engagement. That frickin' crank hit the back of my waiting right hand two or three times before I could even get it out of the way.
