6 volt systems won't tolerate connections that are anything less than PERFECT! Grounds on old iron are particularly week points. The starter has to ground to the rusty bell housing, which has to ground through all the other iron/iron connections back to where you have the ground cable bolted on. (probably on top of the tranny cover plate, which is a terrible ground to the rest of the iron) I ran the batt. ground all the way to the mounting bolt on the starter on my A So far so good.
