Red's comments below are on target. If the outer bearing is the ONLY problem, and you're careful, you can probably do this all from the outside, as he says.

Regarding blocking the tractor up, put some substantial stuff under there before you remove that wheel! The wheel itself is VERY heavy, especially if it has weights and fluid in the tire! GET SOME HELP! If all you have to do is remove the wheel and work on the bearing cap, seal and outer bearing, and if you're lucky enough to get that thing to slide off, you can get away with just jacking and blocking under the drawbar. If you end up having to remove the axle housing, crib up under the bottom of the rear housing with some heavy timbers so the weight is not on just a small area like the top of a bottle jack. Also, LOCK THE BRAKE ON THE OTHER AXLE!!

If it turns out that you have to remove the axle housing, it's not as bad as you may think. By draining some of the lube out of the rear end (might be a good time to change it if it's been there a long time) you can remove the pto assembly and do the inside work through that hole.

The cap screw on the inside end of the axle can be loosened BEFORE removing the wheel, then removed. the axle housing and axle are usually pretty easy to remove after that. Putting it back requires 2 or 3 people. Usually one to maneuver the axle, one to work inside with the big bull gear to line things up, and one to reach for tools and take the blame when things go wrong.

As Red mentions, some of the bearings can be replaced with parts for later models. My M and SM both have 560 bearings pushed into about every place the rear end will accept them.

Today's Featured Article - Picking Corn - by Rick Nikolich. It was the day before Christmas shutdown at work and I asked our lead engineering expert Scott Andrzejewski what he was going to do over the holidays. He said that he had some corn that he still needed to pick with an antique one-row New Idea corn picker. Scott has a nice farm about an hour north of Lansing in St. Johns, MI. He wanted to get the rest of his corn in by the next day (Christmas Eve). We had about an inch of new snow on the ground and single digit temperatures. So in the bac ... [Read Article]
