About 20 years ago , I used to drive to work , on the open road , in an old Wolsley 1500 . It didn't handle , it hardly stopped , but it was very light , and I had really done the motor up , it went like s--t off a shovel !.
My supervisor arranged for me to pick him up , on my way past , for a 5AM start , and I was hoping to impress him with how well this thing went .
We had just left his place , when the lights started to flicker , we had a short , under the dash somewhere .
I kept going "she'll be right", but the cabin was filling up with acrid smoke , so much so we had to wind the windows down !.
Just before the steep cutting at Bulla , the lights cut out all together , but by this time there was a car behind me , so I kept driving , using those lights .
Coming up the steep hill , on the other side , the car behind me , a big loud Ford , blasted past me , and on up the hill . I was sunk without those lights , so I dropped back a couple of gears , and took off after that big Ford .
At the top of the hill , is a big left and right hander , and the little Wolsley handled like a bucket of s--t , we were driving 10/10ths , hanging out about 3 feet , wheels waving in the air , but I was making ground !
But that was it for my "Macho"supervisor , he was trying to kick the door open , and throw himself out on to the road !.
He couldn't , and since I'd caught the big Ford , and we only had a straight mile or 2 to go , I convinced him to stay in the car .
And enjoy the drive !.
He never asked me for a lift either , ever again !.
