Don't tighten the belt more than enough to spin the fan and the generator. Same thing goes for the generator belt. The sleeve bearings inside the hub will wear out. I think this is a weak spot on the Cub/A/B/C. I think the "silver" thing you referred to is the oil fill. It is also a thrust nut. You should be able to put oil into it. The hub is oil filled to lubricate the bearings. I don't think too many people keep the oil in theirs. When the rear seal goes to leaking, there goes the oil. Check for hub wobble with the belt loose. I have a machine shop cut out the innards of the hub and put precision (common) sealed ball bearings in and I can tighten the belts like on a car with no worry. A Super C is much different but still is oil filled and has the same weakness. Hope this helps.
