Don't sell it if you even think you might want it!

Although it is better to start it regularly, if it's had antifreeze it's OK.

Remove the battery, if you can. If it goes flat it may freeze and break leaking acid on the tractor.

The next time you are home you should probably drain the gas from the tank and carb and drain all the water if you plan to let it sit. Better to get some gas additive to prevent the gas from forming varnish during storage and fill the tank with the recommended mixture, but this is not necessary.

It would be nice to block the tractor up so the tires are suspended. Otherwise, you should try to keep them inflated.

You could also avoid future engine work by removing the spark plugs every six months and squirting a little Marvel Mystery Oil in each hole, then cranking the engine over several times by hand to spread the oil. Then replace the plugs. This will help but is not necessary.

Lots of old Farmalls sit outside ten years and start with fresh fuel. That is why we like them.

When you restore it you can fix all the problems it has, including those yet to come.

If you contact some of your dad's friends or neighbors I bet you could get help with the suggestions. Probably someone who would be eager to help. You might even find a real trusted neighbor who would take it and run it now and again just to save it for you.

Good luck! My favorite tractor is my grandpa's M, I'm glad it was "saved", and you may wind up with a child who wants it.

Looking around at my new neighbors, most of whom are city raised and have recently acquired their first mini-farms of five to fifteen acres and also from reading questions ask at various discussion sites on the web it is frighteningly apparent that a great many guys (and a few gals) are learning by trial and error and mostly error how to use a very dangerous piece of farm equipment. It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro ... [Read Article]
