Hi, I am not familiar with the 424 as it was a
British build B414D that was shipped to USA as a
chassis with engine and transmission. The Delco
Remey electrical system, front end, steering
assembly and skin was added using USA parts. On
the B414 Diesel that were sold in Canada the key
switch only enabled the charging system. I looked
at the electrical diagram on caseih.com for the
424 and it would appear the key switch has the
same function and there are two push button
switches on the dash, one for the starter and the
other for the glow plugs. The glow plug indicator
is on the dash with the holes in it, like an old
fashion pepper shaker top. The glow plug indicator
is actually a resistor and will glow when the glow
plugs are hot enough to start the tractor.
Although in warmer climates the indicator does not
have to glow for the tractor to start.
The glow plugs are wired in series, so if one
burns out they all stop working. I would suggest
that if one glow plug is bad that all 4 glow plugs
be replaced. Take notice of the wiring of the glow
plugs before removing them. The over under wiring
sequence must be correct to keep the glow plugs in
series. If they are wired in-correctly they will
burn out the first time they are used.
