main point is your battery will allways be 12 volts , but a good battery will stay at around 12 volts even when you are cranking over engine. a bad battery will drop off voltage too a point whare it is uneffective. formulas are good if you understand that P is power rated in watts , V is volts, and I is current rated in amps. so the power going to your starter (P=V times I). If either V or I are low ,your power (watts) is also low and thus no cranking will accurr.
