Last Sat. my 1950 H starter would spin but would not engage the motor.. first time in more than ten years. The tractor gets moderate light duty and used weekly. It has been converted to 12 v. I tried tapping on the starter casing but to no avail,so I took the 5 minutes to remove the starter and bring in to our local stater/alt. guy whom I have had good success with previously. He opened the starter within 5 minutes and found the spring had broke. He replaced the spring with a heavier spring he had around the shop, installed bushings, cleaned it up a little. It worked great on the bench test. I reinstalled it in the tractor and same thing...starter spins no engagement. Removed the starter turned the ring gear to different spot, same thing. Ring gear seems fine. There were no shims.Any suggestions? Thanks for your help
