There should be a pointer on the engine front cover pointing at the rear flange of the crank pulley. TDC is when the LAST notch in the pulley flange aligns with the pointer (crankshaft being turned in the normal direction of rotation).
However if the pointer is missing all is not lost! Do this:
Remove the #1 (front) spark plug. Stick your thumb over the opening then rotate the crank until you feel pressure building - ie. #1 piston coming up on compression. Now poke a pencil or stiff copper wire into the combustion chamber. Continue turning crank slowly and "feel" for the top of the piston coming up. When your feeler stops moving you will be at TDC. (You should also now see the top of the piston thru the plug opening).
Now turn the distributor drive until the rotor is under the #1 plug tower, then mount it to the engine. Your engine should be timed close enough to start and run. It however will probably need a minor timing adjustment to achieve smoothest running.
