It is a good thing we enjoy our old machines - most days. Yesterday I had one of those days that make me think maybe I should buy some newer IRON. Weather guesser finally forecast three days of no rain, but hot and humid as only the midwest can enjoy in August. I spent the morning preparing the SMTA and NH 455 sickle bar mower for some alfalfa cutting. I was on my 5th round after lunch when a main pivot arm failed on the mower! I drug it to the shed and went to retreive the IHC 27V mower from the weed patch where it had been retired three years ago. Spent the hottest part of the day hooking it up and servicing it. On the far side of second round sheared a pin - none in the tool box ( the 455 doesn't use them!) drug it back to shed. No supply of the right size shear bolts so I put in a slightly undersized one and added a couple to my pocket. Also noticed that my "occasional drip" hydralic return line on the SMTA was getting more serious. So I added more hydralic fluid to the resevoir. Well, the undersized shear bolts and the increasingly serious hydralic leak slowed down my progress for the remainder of the afternoon to the point that just before sunset at the far side of the field,with less than a 1/4 acre to finish, I ran out of gas! I walked home, made myself a big drink, and thought,"Well I got most of the mowing done and tomorrow I get to work on both the SMTA's hydralic line and try and find a part for the mower". I was awakened at 3:30 this morning by a thunderstorm! Ya gotta love it!
