While disking a field last week, I inadvertently ran my tank dry, and I have had problems since then starting the tractor. After I refueled, I could not get the tractor to start (I forgot abot bleeding the air from between the tank and the car). Then, I suspected the fuel filter may have become clog from suspended residue in the 52 year old tank. When I removed the fuel filter, I noticed difficulty in the fuel flow into the sediment bowl. I then removed the sediment bowl, and found excess "corrosion" and particulate build up in the "petcock assembly". I then replaced the sediment bowl and petcock assembly. I still could not get the tractor started, then remember (upon seeing the fuel "trickle" into the new sediment bowl ssembly, that I had to bleed the air out of the gas line. I still have trouble starting the tractor. Today, I took apart the carb and cleaned the needle and jet. Still, the tractor does not start. I then checked the points and rotor, everything seemed in place. In turning the tractor over, it fires up for less than 5 seconds, and sounds like it is firing on only 2, maybe 3, cylinders. Meanwhile, while the starter turns over, the motor and tranny sound like a thrashing machine. All fluid levels show full. After repeated attempts to start the tractor (unsuccessfully) today, I beleive I drained the battery, so that only the starter "clicks" and the tractor will not catch.
Would anyone care to venture a guess as to what is wrong with my tractor to explain why I can't get it to start? As an aside, when I bought the tactor back in '09, it had had th engine (top) overhauled, and since then,I guess I hadput on maybe 40 hours (the tach was disconnected until this past winter whn I had th carb rebuilt and the hydraulics overhauled).
