Stan...You need the compression tester...I bought one for $20-25 or so and it was worth its' weight in gold for diagnosing just such problems. It sounds like a stuck exhaust valve to me. Pulling one plug at a time will help you isolate which cylinder it is. It is possible that it sticks only once in a while which happens with rust, bent, or cracked valves. If the engine has been sitting for a while, rust would be my first guess. Did any of the plugs have rust on the tip..sure sign of rust. If your compression is good in all cylinders but 1, it may be worth it to pull the head and have it re-built. BB
