I have replaced the axle through the PTO housing. It wasn't easy, took 3 of us, and knowing what I know now I'd probably remove the top deck. It comes apart easy. The problem you'll run into, going back together, is positioning the bull gear while trying to stab the axle into it, pretty hard to do with one hand. That's all you can get into the hole after you remove the PTO assembly. Whether you go through the PTO hole or remove the top deck, drain the rear end oil, there are 2 bolts and a retainer holding the bull gear to the axle. remove those. Remove the bolts that hold the axle housing to the trans case. Axle & housing are heavy and unless your a beast it takes 2 people to handle. Once that's laying on the ground remove the outer bearing retainer and drive the axle out that direction. It took a sledge hammer as the bearings where in tight on both ends. I used a wood block and tapped the bearing off of the axle and then put everything back together. This part took 3 of us better part of a Sat to do. Mostly because we hadn't done it before. It then took over a week to get the new gaskets and seals. It went back together a lot quicker except for the procedure to get the bull gear in position so the helper could get the axle into it. This part would have to be dramatically easier with the top deck off. I replaced 2 seals, 2 gaskets and a felt washer.
