Hi Mike - The Red's advice is right on (no ground on the ammeter, no connection on the field resistor - just let it hang or remove it). Regarding the ammeter staying on 0, check it by turning on the ignition or lights with the engine stopped. If the ammeter's working it should indicate a "-" (or "discharge") reading of several amps. Also does the warning light go out when the engine's running? If it goes out, chances are the alternator's working OK. But if it stays lit chances are good the alternator's been toasted.
