Jeff, Just did one on my M and it's quite a job if you want to really clean up the housing gasket faces before installing the new gasket. First, remove the wheel. If you have fluid filled rears be careful. They are heavy. Next, remove the hub from the axle. Now, drain the rear end and pull the pto housing out of the rear end. This gives you an access hole to get in there to loosen the bolt (capscrew) and large heavy washer that hold the bull gear onto the axle shaft. I would NOT totally remove the bolt because the bullgear is heavy and hard to get back onto the axle shaft without taking off the deck cover.

Next, loosen the axle carrier bolts. It helps to have some longer bolts ready to screw into the top and bottom holes after removing the original ones. Carefully pry the axle carrier away from the rear end housing. Right in the center there is a boss that fits into the rearend housing. Donot pry the carrier out so far that the boss comes out of the rear end. It would also help if you have blocks or a tall jack stand arranged to support the outer end of the axle as you are wiggling it around. By having the bull gear loosened you should be able to pry the carrier away far enough to clean the old gasket material off. Once cleaned, slip the new gasket over the outer end of the axle and axle carrier work it around the inner face of the axle carrier. You will have to carefully remove the longer safety bolts you put in but one at a time to get the gasket into place then put the bolt back into the hole.

Once the gasket is in place gently push the axle carrier back into the rearend housing until it is close enough that you can start replacing the regular bolts around the housing. Tighten them all snug then take out the long safety bolts and put the original bolts in those holes. Then go around again and tighten them all @ 110 ft. lbs. Now screw the big capscrew back into the axle inner end to pull the bullgear back onto the axle. Tighten as tight as you can get it in that limited work area you are dealing with. Replace the PTO gasket as well and reinstall the PTO housing.

May as well refill the rearend lube with new as long as you have done all this. Good luck.//FB
