Reading your question on the 460 diesel. First off, the original injection nozzles were amereican bosch and had a higher opening pressure. New they were around 15 to 1600 psi and would settle out at about 1300 after a while. Then IH went to what they called the midget nozzle. It had an opening pressure of about 1000psi and was also adjustable for pintle valve lift by changing the hanger. The engines always started better with the later nozzles. As the 460 still gave a lot of problems starting, IH did an expermental change of the pre-cups and nozzle holder. They changed the length of the pre-cup (shortened it) and lengthened the holder. It did not produce the desired results so they changed back to original specs of the midget nozzle holder and pre-cups. In so doing, as they had advanced the part numbers on the shorter pre-cups and longer nozzle, they had to reinstate the pre-cups with a new part number. This got everything all confused for a lot of repair work. When all is said and done, there are possibly some differences in the head also, but all the latest 236 and 282 all used the same head, precups, and injection nozzles. I changed a few 460's to the newer midget IH nozzle with good results. What your facility did when they gave you a different nozzle was because the bosch injection nozzle tip is no longer available at least to some suppliers and it is also about twice as expensive. You need to determine what pre-cup numbers you have in there and match them to the nozzle. This may take some research. Also, if the nozzle body is too short it will surely just shoot compression out like crazy as it has to seal to work at all. Make darn sure the pre-cups have not turned in their bore and are out of alignment as they only line up one way. It says up on the one side. Another thing, have you checked the static and automatic timing advance. A maladjusted automatic advance will make that engine miss like crazy with no load and smooth right out when pulling. It has a load advance system that once the engine starts the advance is two marks on the window and should retard one mark at half load and full two marks at full load. Most roosa master pumps have a speed advance which gradually advances with increase of engine rpm but these pumps are not that way. Many who are not familiar with the load advance have no idea about this. It is readily adjustable and is very finicky. Just a slight drop in fuel pressure , even from heavy to light fuel can cause a tremendous difference. Good luck, don't junk it out, not just yet anyway.

Today's Featured Article - Box Plow Blues - by Tom Schwarz. One of the first implements most tractor owners obtain is the box plow. For very little money, this piece of equipment promises to plow and flatten any hill or vale on your ranch road or farm. At least that's what I thought! As simple as a box plow appears, it can be rather challenging to make work correctly. In our sandy soils of Florida, traction is king. You can never have wide enough tires or heavy enough weights to get all the traction you want … unless you own a monster tractor. U ... [Read Article]
