OH NO!! Transmission oil overflow hole???

[ View Follow Ups ] [ Post Followup ] [ Return to Forum ]

Posted by Pete in PA on June 27, 2000 at 19:14:55 from (64.41.32.57):

Uh oh. I went out to the barn this evening to get something and noticed a large dark spot under my '61 140. What I instantly and feverishly *hoped* was a water spot from an unknown leak in the barn roof turned out to be oil! After investigating I determined that the oil came from the transmission case area, as the drip pattern and pool of oil since Sunday when I last used the tractor (and incidentally "topped off" the transmission fluid - too much perhaps). Specifically from two locations (as seen by the "clean trail" where chaff had been washed away by dripping oil): the first location seems to be from around the PTO, the second seems to be from a small hole underneath the tractor which seems to be on the far right of the transmission case. I could find no reference to this hole in my owners manual, although it seems that something is supposed to be there because there is a cut-out leading to the hole (like a cut out for a socket wrench access) I looked at this hole, and was unable to determine exactly if it was threaded as if for a plug of some sort, although it did not look threaded)

My questions are: 1) does the 140 have an overflow hole off the transmission case on the underside of the tractor? 2) does anyone have any ideas of what sorts of troubleshooting can be done to ID this problem? 3) What am I looking at in regard to the PTO leak? A gasket? A seal? An (gulp) overhaul??

I realize this may sound a bit vague, but any help you folks can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
