There was a engine serial # break on C281 engines. Original cams in a C281 before the break had right hand threads, after the break they used left hand threads. That cam also started being sold by IH as a replacement cam for C248, C264 and C281 engines. If the cam is a original IH cam, it will have the numbers 48196DA or 45995DA for a right hand thread cam. 48196DB or 45995DB for a left hand thread. Have also found aftermarket or reground cams with IH # 48196DB or other numbers stamped on them. M time period C248 engines came with 48196D or 45995D cams, C264 Supers also. C264 engines with a higher serial # than 136XXX (can't remember the exact #) came with 48196DA or 45995DA cam. All numbers are off the top of head, think I remember them and they are correct. If there's a question I can look to make sure.
