Gary...A little story that may be instructive. 9 months ago my father and I were talking about his father who was a farmer in Illinois, but who has long since passed. My sister had given my dad a subscription to a couple of farming magazines that would always run stories of people restoring tractors and he told me that he would like to someday restore a Farmall H like he drove as a kid...well, he is 64 years old and not getting any younger. My interest in antique tractors was sparked

I didn't know anything about tractors, but happened onto a 52 Cub that didn't run and had some implements with it and the price was right. I bought it last November and it was trouble from the beginning. The spark plugs were rusted into the holes, I didn't know how the ignition system worked, how the carb worked or even if they could work. It even had 3 stuck valves.

Slowly I worked my way through each part of the tractor learning my way as I went, relying heavily on this board and ATIS, as well as the manuals.

Fast forward to today. I have a running 52 Cub that after years of neglect is back in service and is cutting grass at the family farm. I had no previous experience in working on tractors. None is needed. If the desire is there, the expertise will follow.

I have had more fun working on old tractors than most people could imagine. For me, working on them is the fun part, owning and using them is icing on the cake. I just bought a non running Super H (I hope that it will substitute for the H my dad wants...I haven't told him I have it yet) that I am trying out my hard won knowledge on. Buy a good tractor at a reasonable price and you can't go wrong. Buy one and have fun...I'm hooked. I'll help you any way I can from afar...Bama

Today's Featured Article - Choosin, Mounting and Using a Bush Hog Type Mower - by Francis Robinson. Looking around at my new neighbors, most of whom are city raised and have recently acquired their first mini-farms of five to fifteen acres and also from reading questions ask at various discussion sites on the web it is frighteningly apparent that a great many guys (and a few gals) are learning by trial and error and mostly error how to use a very dangerous piece of farm equipment. It is also very apparent that these folks are getting a lot of very poor and often very dangerous advice fro ... [Read Article]
