There is another thing that must be considered too. It's not so much as an octane rating problem as it is an ignition issue now. The reason we need higher octane gas is not so much as a result of compression ratio as it is due to the removal of the LEAD out of the gas. The lead made cumustion cooler while lubricating parts such as the valve seats. It doesn't help with the 10% ethenol either. Makes it more suseptable to pre-igntion (pinging). Octane will certainly help, but you also have to look at the heat range of the spark plugs too! Some times you can swap out to a "colder" plug from what was used as stock and it will help as well. The OEM heat rating plugs sometimes get red hot and stay that way (like a glow plug) causing pre-ignition.
