1) A "Cutout Relay" is a 2 terminal (BAT and GEN) switching device that basically makes or breaks (relay open or close) the connection between the Generator and the battery. Thats ALLLLLLLLL it does, its open when the tractor is setting there not running (or low RPM) so the battery dont discharge through the genny, but closed when shes running so the gennys output can get to and charge the battery. Now to regulate the amount of charging, the gennys FLD is connected up to a LHBD Light Switch so it can be set for LOW or HIGH charge manually.
2) A Voltage Regulator also has an an internal Cutout Relay between its BAT and GEN terminal same as above and performs the same function above. HOWEVER it ALSO AUTOMATICALLY REGULATES THE RATE OF CHARGE, theres NO Low/High charge manual light switch charge control/settting. To do so the gennys FLD is now (instead of wired to low/high light switch as above) wired to the VR"s FLD post and it automatically regulates the charge rate.
3) With a Cutout Relay you have the LHBD light switch (often 3 brush gennys also) which the gennys FLD post wires to,,,,,,With a Voltage Regulator the gennys FLD wire to FLD terminal on the VR and the light switch (OBD) ONLY operates lights.
