Picked up a Farmall 140 around Christmas, She had been used and really abused. A tree had been dropped on it. The hydraulic oil looked like greenish yellow mud and the hydraulics were frozen up. The transmission oil looked like green mud too.
The touch controls lever, steering wheel, steering shaft, battery box and steering wheel support bracket were all flattened by the tree. The steering box had no oil in it the seals were gone and the casting was cracked when the tree bent the steering shaft.
The tractor had hit something in the front and bent the radiator back a little. The nose of the tractor was bent back and had been welded by someone who did not know how to weld The two point hitch on the back was gone and the light brackets were bent in a U.
Now you might be thinking why the $%#& did he buy it. Well for several good reasons (or at least some words in my defense) First, I’m about the worst mechanic you ever saw and didn’t see half of what I just described. Second, the tractor for some strange reason started right up and did not smoke at all. Third, I had been looking for a 140 and there just weren’t that many around my area.
Well any how with a little help from my son who used to be a mechanic (free labor is always good) and help from a paid mechanic plus plenty of advice from people like the ones on this site I got running yesterday. The steering, hydraulics and all the tree damage is in “A1” shape now. Changed the oil in the tranny and it sounds real good. . I got a complete two point hitch of e-bay for $60.00. The radiator is still bent a little but does not leak. The nose was brazed and with plenty of body filler it doesn’t look too bad if it’s dark enough or you a ways off especially if I take my glasses off.
Anyway it seems to be running pretty good and I plan to use it cultivating veg’s on my farm this summer. I figure I can fix the cosmetics later as long as it’s mechanically sound.
So from someone who’s mechanical experience was changing oil & greasing equipment WOPEEE.
