You will need a solenoid with a 12 volt coil voltage. The main contacts in a 6 or 12 volt solenoid should carry the battery current. Since you hear nothing I must assume that the solenoid coil is what is burning out. At any auto discount store get a solenoid for a 70 or newer Ford truck for $5 or $6 and you should be on your way to having long life from the device.
