This picture is good example of a damaged drive that will cause engagement problems.
If the flywheel ring gear teeth are burred over on the ends they can be cleaned up with a file or small grinder. The ring gear teeth do not necessarily need a bevel on them but it is helpful if they do. It is critical that the Bendix drive teeth are beveled on the non-load bearing side.
