Gene - This diagram should answer your wiring questions. The terminals on your solenoid may be labelled differently but they're not hard to figure out. Also the wire between the solenoid "I" terminal and the ballast resistor is optional - I've found Farmalls start/fun fine without it connected. Recommend you leave it out...

Regarding the warning light/diode, if you wire the lamp as shown, you don't need the diode. I personally prefer the warning lamp over the diode. It performs same function as the alternator idiot light in most cars - comes on if the alternator quits, the drive belt breaks, etc. As other, less "gage watching" operators often run my tractors, I like having the alternator warning light on 'em. (Note: You can also substitute a 10 ohm, 2 watt or higher resistor in place of the warning light...)
