Yes, you need a separate two-way valve to run a two-way cylinder, and leave the M's lever pulled back at all times.
This will power the cylinder both ways.
What you are doing is building a two-way system on top of the M's one-way system. More modern tractors do basically the same thing, except it's all done under the covers, without the one-way valve.
