Sometimes you get lucky (no, I don't mean it THAT way). Back in February, I bought a low hour (maybe 1000 hrs) Farmall 400 w/Electrall. Having only pictures, I agreed to pay his asking price over the telephone if everything worked. After pulling my trailer for two hours to get to his location, I test drove the tractor and found that the TA would disengage under load. He was surprised that it didn't work and I was upset that he had misrepresented the condition of the tractor. He said it worked fine when he drove it the 10 miles to his place last summer. I removed the fill plug on the side of the rear frame and discovered that the frame was filled with something that looked like tar. Because he wouldn't renegotiate the price and because I thought that the lube might be the problem, I paid him and loaded the tractor. It took a week to get that goop out of the tractor. I had to heat my shop to over 100 degrees, put a heat gun in the hole where the shift lever goes, and elevate the front end about 2 feet. The oil was so thick that a 5 gallon bucket of the material at 30 degrees would not pour. I replaced the oil with Hy-Tran and finally was able to give the tractor a work-out last week-end.
The TA works fine now. Had a similar problem with the hydraulic oil. There was 3/4 of an inch of solidified oil in the bottom of the reservoir. I had to break it up with a screwdriver. It looked and felt like coal. The intake screen had collapsed because it was completely covered with this stuff. I was able to buy a new screen from C&G and filled the system with Hy-Tran. I put on a Behlin PS system and replaced all the valves because the PS requires two special valves and the other two valves were frozen tight. Don't think that they had ever been used. I put on a Fast Hitch and everything on the tractor works great
