Bser: Watch this one, I think any modern day diesel engine small enough to fit in place of a IH C-123, will turn in excess of 2,000 rpm to generate the same power as a 140. With those kinds of rpm's on a hi-clear 140, you'd need GPS for backing up.
I've looked at this one on numerous ocasions, and the diesels I see are a D-166 used in IH 340. Possibly one of the IH British diesels, it's still a lot of work. I like these two as they simplify the hydraulic pump.
Your probably not going to improve fuel efficiency a whole lot. I just finished putting my 140 through 40 hours of front and rear cultivators in 2nd gear full throttle, and I averaged 2.8L of gas per hour. I had enough cultivator shanks on there, tractor was working hard. I don't think it would have had enough power for 3rd gear.
