Starters with drive engaging selonoids only came on 400 diesel tractors. They were used on 450 LP tractors and used for replacement LP starters on 400. LP and diesel starters are different though. IH must of thought the selonoid engaging type was better for higher cranking losds. I think if adjusted correct they give less wear and tear to ring gear and drive.
