When I was 17, I was away at school in New Hampshire when my father wrote to tell me of the passing of our beloved 13-year old Springer (both retired to Florida, the dog died of eating clamshells on the beach). That was pre-cellphone, and all we had was a payphone in the dorm basement so letters were the way to stay in touch, mostly. The letter was 2+ yellow legal pages and went on about how he knew how we both loved that dog and all the great times would stay with us forever and how Scamper was chasing tennis balls in Springer heaven. It was a beautiful letter written only a few weeks before his own death in 1971. I treasure the memory of them both and I really wish I still had that letter. I have had a lot of great doggies since but that first one is forever...my condolences to you and your son.
