Hi Fred - In addition to working a lot with old tractors, my day job requires me to work a lot with attorneys. I guess sometimes I get to thinking like 'em (shudder....) Hence my 1st statement about jumping 6 volts from 12 not being a good idea. That aside, we routinely jump 6 volts from 12 - most recently yesterday afternoon. As long as you do it correctly it's not a problem. Just keep in mind a flat 6 volt battery "looks" pretty much like a dead short to a 12 volt system when the jumper cables are attached. Also 6 volt ignition parts will not survive a long duration (more than a few of minutes) of being fed with 12 volts. Also consider this: If the 6 volt battery is fully charged, AND you happen to get the polarity wrong when you connect the jumper cables, it's WORSE than a dead short - you'll flow a prodigious amount of current thru both systems in the fraction of a second before something melts. Bottom line: Disconnecting the 6 volt battery when jumping form 12 volts is an excellent idea if you're not absolutely certain of what you are doing!! (Thanks to whoever suggested it...) Bob M
