Low Low gear, with high alt pistons, it should be a fairly stout tractor with the help from the low gear set right off the bat. I have one in a 50 H and with the engine I had in it, low gear was useless in pulling till it got up to bout 6500 and then it might work the engine a bit to notice.
M carb will be fine. It would have more pulling power with the small H carb built right, the big carb would be a way to help dial it in, but if its too strong for your purpose you have the option of changing venturi sizes to DETUNE the tractor to a more usable HP range.
I used to run restricter plates to take the temper out of it and grab a good bite and hang on to it, then later I decided to use different venutri sizes, and they were all LARGER to do the same thing, and that was to soften the torque curve enough to let the tires bite but not overpower em to the point of wheel slippage.
My prediction would be that if its 38-40 hp, you will do well in a heavy class and well,,, do more with less. It should have good power, but it may be too much for a light class if pulling on a track. Dial in the H carb, see how spunky it really is, if its too strong, go with the bigger carb and detune it till you get the bite just right. I think it will be stronger as a puller than you might think, big difference between the speeds! Chad
