Harry: The tractor is 50+ years old, unless your absolutely certain of items rebuilt, problem areas could be most anywhere. Two of the more common problems one sees are governors and steering box. Another Item I'd look for is Rockford clutch. You can see this through inspection hole. The old Auburn clutches were 3 spring, whereas Rockford is 6 spring pressure plate. Most have been changed to rockford, and if you find an Auburn, most likely it needs to be rebuilt.
Listen for transmission noise in each and every gear. Jack the rear wheels to check for any looseness in rear axle bearings. Run the hydraulic levers through complete range, one at a time, make sure rockshafts work in unison with levers, and without unusual noise.
If the vendor has owned tractor for 5 years or more, quietly quiz him on lubrication of fan hub lubrication and distributor drive lubrication. If he isn't aware of how to do that or if in fact both are required every 6 months, you best count on both giving trouble, probably $200.+ if you have to go with new parts.
Super A with original engines 1947 to 1951 block part number should be 251069 R1, after 1951 354898 R1. If original both engines are C-113 with 3" bore. The 251069 R1 could have been changed to 3-1/8" bore and 354898 R1 could have been changed to 3-1/8" or 3-1/4" bore. Look for block breakage or repair behind carb. Carter carbs are poor, Zenith is much better.
Tractor and engine serial numbers will be very close to each other until 1951. After that time a spread develops gradually to 2,000 by 1954. Engine numbers get higher than tractor numbers.
