It sounds like the tractor runs, and you get the spark as you pull the negative lead off the battery while it's running. I think this is normal, since you're interrupting the charging circuit when you pull that cable off (sort of like the spark you see if you pull the cables off a battery while you have it on a charger). Your ammeter should go from charge to zero as you do this, indicating that charging has suddenly stopped. If your tractor runs, but the battery is always going dead and won't stay charged, then there's probably a ground somewhere on the negative side. Some of the archives describe seeing "discharge" on the ammeter as the tractor sits not running as a sure sign that there is a ground somewhere. If this is the case, then try disconnecting the neg. lead to the starter. If the meter now reads zero, then a grounded starter is causing your battery to drain. If it still reads discharge, then the ground is somewhere else. Disconect electrical components one by one until the ground goes away. The last wire you removed will be connected to the cause of the ground. Label everything if you do this to keep the wires straight. That's all I can really tell you since that's as far as I am, but I'm willing to help more if possible. I'm working on a 41 A with 6 volt, so yours will be wired a little different. Some guys don't worry about it and just pull the neg cable off the battery when the tractor sits so it doesn't drain while it's not running.
