There is an optional (but rarely omitted) hydraulic pump standard on all M Farmalls. The system is located in the torque tube, Chassis, and is called a Liftall. The pump is only operational when the clutch is engaged (not pushed in) this means it stops when the tractor's clutch is pushed. Non-Live hydraulics. It is very useful, and very rarely gives any problems. (of course it is almost 70 years old!) There is also a Live Pump system is used on late 1953 Super Ms and later tractors. including SMTA, 400, and 450. This pump is retrofitted to older tractors (with front cover, and drive gear changes to improve reliability). It is located in front of the distributoe, and takes the place of a cast distributor drive housing. It is a live pump, and works all the time. Another pump was provided by M&W corp. and fits on the earlier bolt pattern of the drive mount. They work well, but replacement of the drive gears are recommended for strength. (most have been) The Liftall is a single acting system, (but can be modified by piping and valves to operate two way cylinders. The Live pump can be found in many configurations. from single acting, to multiple outlet dual acting. More info is in the archives, and by asking , JimN
