12 Volt Charging System Made Right

Posted by IHank on March 29, 2000 at 19:14:32 from (167.142.25.27):

My F-450 came to me with a 12 volt system using the old style GM alternator. It had a little "gee whiz" box gadget, apparently as the voltage regulator and self excitor system. One day it would be a no charge situation and the next it would be a pegged ampmeter... In the days before tear down it was a no charge situation.

I took the alternator apart and all was well inside. There was nothing wrong with the alternator.

The little silver gadget had wires connected- one to ground, one to alt output, one to stator, and one to field. Humm... I got two points for hitting the junk bucket from across the room with it!

The needed design correction and repair action was applied as follows-

Told the car parts clerk I wanted a voltage regulator for a '65 Dodge. About 30 bucks got me a small black box with an electric terminal on opposite ends, one for power in and one for field current out.

A jumper wire was made up, to connect the switch power side of the ignition resistor to the power in terminal, thru a 5 amp in-line fuse. Another jumper wire was made up, connecting the regulator output to the field terminal on the alternator.

This system uses what appears to be the original generator bracket. The alterntor mounts on the front tab and the white ceramic Dodge style ignition resistor is on the rear tab. I bolted the regulator on the front side of the rear tab. All components are physically close together.

This trick can be used with about any brand of old style alternator, the ones that use an external regulator. It is very important to tap into a switched 12 volt source before it goes thru any dropping resistors.

Hope this info helps somebody else. IHank

Today's Featured Article - Box Plow Blues - by Tom Schwarz. One of the first implements most tractor owners obtain is the box plow. For very little money, this piece of equipment promises to plow and flatten any hill or vale on your ranch road or farm. At least that's what I thought! As simple as a box plow appears, it can be rather challenging to make work correctly. In our sandy soils of Florida, traction is king. You can never have wide enough tires or heavy enough weights to get all the traction you want … unless you own a monster tractor. U ... [Read Article]
