Fuel problem

I just finished painting my new cub and I took it out on its mayden voyage, and she broke. I redid the motor last year and mowed last season with it with no problems. I mowed for about an hour and no problems and then all of a sudden it spuddered and quick like it ran out of gas. Had about 1/4 tank. My battery needs replacing so I got off, put the handcrank in, and it started on the first spin. Ran it about ten minutes and it died with no warning. this happened several times. My real Question falls in here. If I kneeled down by the carb and looked at the fuel bowl(while running) I could see an air bubble in the top of the bowl. not a low level just a bubble( about 1/5th. of the top). Also there is a bubble in the spout that the fuel comes through from the tank. If I pulled the choke closed, while still running, to increase the flow, small bubbles whould come out and join the big bubble in the top. I shook, drove on a hill and all and the bubble would not go away. I even added gas to no avail. I have never seen this and don't know where to begin. There were a few bits of stuff in the bowl so I guess I should check strainers but don't understand the air! I don't want gas all over the paint so the less attempts at a soultion the better. ANY advice appreciated and considered!!! Thanks in advance..
