A rotary brush capable mower, ("bush Hog") of 6 foot width will be fine in most two to three foot grass. If it is heavier, going slower (first or second gear) will do. If it is only a foot or so, third gear will work. Do not run at part throttle, just leave it wide open. The PTO speed depends on it. If it still has trouble, run partial cuts in the heavy material. This allows you to have maximum cut when conditions are good, and ability to keep going when they are rough. I have no brand loyalty, because you get what you pay for. I've had Bush Hog brand, John Deere, and some others. Farm store models are usually prone to gear box damage. If the gear box is rated for 40 HP, the H will not break it. Buy a overrunning clutch to put in the mower drive line to prevent the mower from pushing the H when the clutch is pushed in. Always use the correct shear bolt in the drive to avoid problems and sheared teeth in the gears. Adjust the machine so the front cuts about 3/4" lower than the back of the blade. THis keeps the mower from cutting stumps and stalks more than once on a pass. JimN
