I usually remove the front hand hole cover and catch when the number one cylinder intake valve is closing by watching the cam. Then take the number one piston to the top dead center, the timing mark is in that hole at the left side front of the bell housing. With the mag fully retarded, rotor pointing at the number one terminal and the points just beginning to open, align the closest holes at the coupler adjustment. Test it like KEB1 says, for impulse check. I usually take the bolts loose first at the coupler, in case somebody got it wrong, but if you check it first it may be close already, then un-bolting to change isn't a long process. When i restore one, i check the valve position while the valve cover is off to find number one position and time the mag right then. It can come off after that for painting and go right back on already timed. But for a tractor assembled needing timed, i remove a hand hole cover like mentioned before.
