I would suggest that you purchase a generic book on the design and operation of powershift transmissions and torque converters. Basically the torque converter (pump) supplies the hydraulic pressure to engage the clutch packs in the transmission. The forward/reverse and the gear selector lever operate valves in the transmission. The torque converter is also a less than positive coupler in the drive train allowing a certain amount of slip in tractor movement dependant on the load of the tractor. The TD20B powershift transmission was either the first or second generation of IH transmissions. This particular transmission is very susceptable to oil temperature. The transmission will slip if the oil cooler is not dissapating heat properly or the tractor is operated in a high gear under a heavy load. The "C" models had a better transmission and the "E" models were awesome in performance. One of the previous posts suggested than CAT was a better tractor. During the 70's, I believe that IH made a better 20 series crawler than the CAT D7 series. I am sure that I will hear about my comments from the CAT people. IH designed their tractors to be steered using 2 clutch/brake levers instead of 2 clutch levers and 2 brake pedals. We used IH TD20B,C & E models for log skidding and a TD25C for road building. Incidently, I own a 1961 IH TD18 ag crawler with a BeeGee pump/dual valves and a 1956 Cat D7-17A logger (live cable blade, winch and complete ROPS with brush guard). Both are excellant condition for their age. Old habits are hard to break. Ray
