Primer?

What kind of primer do you guys recommend? Epoxy, self etching, or sanding? I would think that the epoxy would be the best, but I heard that it just sits on top of the metal and doesn't get in the pores of the metal like other primers might. It will lift after time. Has any body experianced this? Also has any body used a clear coat top coat on the tin work, or is this going too far for a working tractor.
