I have heard both sides of the weak spring argument. Mechanical Engineer friend said that good springs will not be weakened if stored compressed or with tension. To many "old boys" have been doing it for too many years for it not to work. I don't think they'd want to make more work for themselves long term if it weakened the springs to block a clutch.
