460 is a knocking...

...and I wasn"t a rocking. Last evening I was snowblowing the latest storm to hit the Northeast. I had made a couple of passes on the driveway when the tractor started knocking. I had checked the oil prior to starting the tractor and it was ok and the oil pressure was fine (about 42 lbs). Listening to the knock it appears to be coming from near the rear of the engine or transmission area. I am leaning towards the front bearing on the PTO shaft. The reason being is the knock seems to be about the same RPM as the PTO shaft. Also it seems to dissipate some when I load up the blower with snow. It makes the noise when the PTO is engaged or stopped. I haven"t taken the time to count and time the knock to determine the RPM. I thought of this after I came in for the evening all discouraged. I have a couple of questions and would like all of your opinions on the knocking. I want to eliminate possible sources. Someone at work has suggested the hydro pump as a source. I thought that ran at a higher RPM than the engine or PTO, but can I hurt anything if I remove the hydro pump and start the tractor? Also, I assume if it is the bearings on the PTO shaft that I will need to split the tractor to replace them? Sorry for the long post. Appreciate your input. I"ll try the plastic tube/stethescope check Saturday to try and pin point the area of the noise.
