Jon- The 6 volt starters were built extremely "heavy duty", as to wire size, insulation, and mechanical design. Most likely your starter is one of those. When they were fed 12 volts instead of the slow, grinding, heating up the motor, chewing up the pinion and flywheel gear, and all the other stupidity that went with it simply didn't happen. You hit the starter switch with 12 volts on tap and that HD 6 volt starter took on an "attitude"-- Like, this SOB is gonna start fast or I'll twist the flywheel off! And that's what happened... The engine would usually be running before you could release the starter switch. The heating, and grinding, and mechanical stresses were gone! Instead of having to re-build the starter every few years it lasted forever. Go ahead and restore a 12 volt DC generator system, hide the ignition resistor up under the sheet metal over the engine, nobody can see what's in the battery box, and in all honesty very few viewers really care one way or another about all this. It is just some pole vaulting over a mouse turd! Bulbs are just a matter of parts changing and probably some fancy prices if you want to go back to 6 volts. Jon, some perspective on these things-- After you've done lots of authenticity research, spent a small fortune on "correct" parts and fabric braided wiring in the right colors, and have total perfection, there will be some moron heckle you about the fly specks on the tail lite lens. Whatever you do man, just do your best and blow off any criticisms from the cheap seats. Good luck!
