Everyone has their own ideas, but I guess I enjoy using them too much, and it is very hard to work them without marring them now and then, either by accident, or by a quick fix done in a hurry when rain is threatening a field full of hay, etc. I repainted one of mine a couple years ago, and some would cringe at the job I did, but it still looks good and probably better than some I have seen in the shows. The cast parts were brushed, then rattle can to flow it out. All the sheet metal was prepped (not to perfection, but good), then rattle can sprayed. Don't get me wrong, I removed all the loose rust and scale, grease, and scaling paint before I painted. I probably have less than $100 in the whole paint job including sandpaper, and a couple of wire brushes for the 4 inch grinder. I enjoy working them, and am not afraid of scratching them, and have a can of touch up if I do. I figure this is about the way they looked when they were a year or so old, by looking at some of the old photos. They did not have high gloss paint jobs, clear coats, and most of the time the paint was faded early on in their life.
