I got the fuel gauge pulled from the tank and it was almost rusted through. Got a small flashlight in the inlet hole and the tank is very rusty. I then examined the new strainer assembly. The inlet pipe to the cut off valve was PACKED, not with playdo type gas, but RUST! I pulled the cutoff assembly out and have the valve and strainer assembly soaking in gas. The rust is loose so it should clean out just fine. I will get the tank to the Plainfield IN radiator shop which specializes in boiling and sealing gas tanks. I will also pull the carburetor top. If it has rust in the bowl, then the 10 feet of gas line from the fuel pump to the carburetor is rusted inside. Two Deere dealers supposedly have the original rigid lines but I can get custom ones made if I need to. Thank you for all your analysis which was quite good. I will rebuild the carb and soak it in carb cleaner if I find rust in the bowl. Many Thanks Farmallers. :)
