The 1086 is the best in my opinion - it has good power for the size and is fuel efficient, and also has the right speeds for many jobs. Ours has around 9000 hours on it without any more trouble than a person would expect in almost 30 years.
I've heard of trouble with the 1486 rearend and transmission (basically more HP, same rear end as 1086)... but some people have had great luck with them as well.
The 1586 is near useless in my opinion due to the poorly spaced gears and it seems like every speed is either too fast or too slow. I've only run one of them and didn't like the transmission at all.
