Red: Don's wife Carol is a former Nova Scotian, a good friend on my wife. They went to Teachers College together, later worked together on the same staff. A year or so after Marg. and I were married, Carol decided to be adventuresome and accepted a teaching position in Le Chute QC. From there she met Don and they married.
In the 1960s, we had never met Don, however were on our way to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto. We wanted to touch base with Don and Carol, but we also wanted to surprise them. We took longer than expected coming through Montreal, and found ourselves in Le Chute about 7:30 pm. A dark, rainy, foggy night, we decided there was no way we'd find Mille Isle. Off to a pay phone I go, Carol was out to a meeting, I explained to Don who I was, who my wife was. He said, "Carol has made me aware of who you folks are over the years, stay right where your at, I'll come and meet you."
If I recall that big house at Mille Isle had about 20 rooms, thus it wasn't hard to separate women talk from farming talk. Don and I must have tilled a million acres that night. I don't know as I ever met a man, so intense in talking about his agriculture. Finally around 1 am the women appeared on the sceene, and cold. Bear in mind this was Nov., Don and I got so wrapped up in farming, he let his wood fires go out. Don was dispatched to fireman duty PDQ. I tell you it was a long while before warmth came back to those rooms.
Over the years, we have visited with Don and Carol and they with us several times. Everytime, Don and I got in a marathon discussion re agriculture. Not only was Don very interesting to talk with, he always wanted to know the latest agricultural developments across the land. Marg. and Carol keep in touch every year at Christmas.
