Ron: I don't know a lot about Idaho mean temperatures, however I can tell you these 4 cylinder Farmall gassers are good as far down as -40F as long as you keep them well tuned. My dad always said, "Much colder than -30F, I don't want them to start anyhow." Put it this way, the SC will be willing when the flesh is not. From the detail in your post, I suspect your flesh is not much younger than mine.
Just maybe, your son may have a different outlook. I know my dad didn't have a big problem getting me to drive the 300 a half mile back to the barn at -40F one morning back in 1956. The 300 was 6 volt, and went urh-urh-urh, and on that last one she fired up, Jan. 1956. Our next problem the governors were froze in excess of governed speed. I jumped on, poked her in 4th and headed for deep snow, (12" on flat field) After about 3 minutes in the deep snow the governors thawed out, she ran normal. I just continued on to the farm stead. You'd need big money to convince me to do that today. We were all, once young and foolish.
